RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To comparatively assess the wear resistance of conventional and flowable composites containing different filler types using thermomechanical chewing simulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six different composite resin materials were used: a conventional and flowable composite from each of three manufacturers respectively classified by different filler characterizations: (1), a nanohybrid conventional (G-aenial Posterior, GC) and flowable (G-aenial Universal Injectable, GC), (2) a nanofilled conventional (Filtek One Bulk-fill Restorative, 3M) and flowable (Filtek Ultimate Flow, 3M), and submicron-filled conventional (Estelite Posterior Quick, Tokuyama) and flowable (Estelite Bulk-Fill Flow, Tokuyama). The buccal surfaces of extracted human premolars were planarly abraded and used as control (n = 12). The prepared surfaces were subjected to wear using a thermocycler chewing simulator against 6-mm diameter steatite balls for 240,000 cycles, simulating 1 year of in vivo use. Digital profiles of treated sample surfaces were scanned using a laser scanner, and the volume loss and maximum depth of loss were calculated. Two-way MANOVA was used to compare the wear volume loss and depth according viscosity (conventional/flowable) and filler type (nanohybrid, nanofilled, submicron-filled), and multiple comparisons were performed using Duncan's test. RESULTS: Wear volume loss and loss depth were significantly lower in enamel than in all composite resin groups. The wear volume loss and loss depth of nanofilled composites were significantly higher than the other composite filler types, with no significant difference in either parameter between the nanohybrid and submicron-filled composite groups. With respect to apparent viscosity, wear volume loss and loss depth of conventional composites were significantly lower than the flowable composites. CONCLUSIONS: The type of composite filler and its apparent viscosity significantly influence the in vitro wear resistance of the material. All composite materials tested demonstrated a susceptibility to simulated wear that was two to three times greater than that of human enamel. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Flowable composite resins provide a level of convenience in clinical application. Despite advancements in their wear characteristics, they continue to display inferior wear resistance compared to conventional composite resins. Nevertheless, all tested composite resins exhibited a significantly higher potential for wear than human enamel.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effects of heavy metals and drought on tree drying in three maple species located in the Kastamonu Campus in northwestern Türkiye. Soil samples were taken from 0-30 cm depth under maple species, and some soil properties were analyzed. The standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index was calculated for the drought impression using 71 years of climate data. The severe drought has had its effect (1.516) since August 2020. There was an extreme drought in January and February 2021 (-2.032 and -2.076, respectively), and this drought effect lasted until August as a severe drought. Chromium concentration at maple species was almost twice higher than the Maximum Allowable Limit for Türkiye (> 100 mg kg-1). The highest nickel concentration was found under Acer pseudoplatanus (97.25 mg kg-1) and Acer negundo (108.13 mg kg-1). The sampling sites were nonsignificant for copper (p = 0.806), lead (p = 0.916), and zinc (p = 0.866) heavy metals. Phyllosticta minima and Phyllactinia marissallii were detected in maple trees. In conclusion, it is understood that drought and heavy metal accumulation (chromium, nickel) in the soil affect tree drying. Physiological drought was first seen in trees due to the lack of rainfall in 2020. Soils were contaminated with heavy metals, and finally, diseases were seen. These results show that adverse climate events due to global climate change will have a negative impact on the growth and development of maple species, as their severity is expected to increase in the next few years.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of a pediatric cohort surgically treated for primary or secondary pediatric glaucoma (PPG/SPG). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of all patients with pediatric glaucoma who had surgery between 2013 and 2021. Relevant demographic and clinical data were cumulated and analyzed. RESULTS: Forty-two eyes of 29 patients (18 girls and 11 boys) were included: 22 (52.4%) primary congenital glaucoma (PCG), 7 (16.7%) juvenile open-angle glaucoma, and 13 (30.9%) SPG. Mean ages at presentation were 2.57 ± 2.87, 131.96 ± 27.71, and 62.09 ± 65.12 months, respectively. In this study, eyes with PCG presented the earliest, with the highest intraocular pressure (IOP) and thickest central corneal thickness (CCT). The mean number of glaucoma surgeries was 1.48 ± 0.71, with 38.1% of the eyes needing two or more glaucoma surgeries; trabeculectomy was the most frequent glaucoma surgery in this cohort. After surgical intervention, the overall mean IOP dropped from 32.25 ± 12.97 to 18.10 ± 9.23 mm Hg (P < .001). Moreover, the percentage using antiglaucoma medications decreased from 100% to 35.7% at the final visit, as did the number of medications prescribed per eye (2.69 ± 0.92 vs 1.05 ± 1.46, P ≤ .001). Mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), in patients who could have their BCVA measured, improved from 0.61 ± 0.61 to 0.53 ± 0.51 logMAR at final follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical intervention was shown to provide a well-controlled IOP, decrease dependance on glaucoma medications, and improve BCVA in both PPG and SPG. Multiple surgical interventions may be necessary in the treatment of some pediatric patients with glaucoma. Prognostically, thicker CCT was significantly associated with worse IOP control, more glaucoma surgeries, and more antiglaucoma medications at the final visit. Initial BCVA correlated significantly with BCVA at final visit. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 20XX;X(X):XXX-XXX.].

RESUMO

We report a case of a metallic intraocular foreign body (IOFB) retained in the anterior chamber (AC) angle that was masquerading as herpetic stromal keratitis. A 41-year-old male construction worker was referred to our ophthalmology clinic with the complaint of consistent blurred vision for 3 days in his left eye. He had no history of ocular trauma. The best-corrected visual acuity was found to be 10/10 in the right eye and 8/10 in the left eye. On slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment, the right eye was normal, while the left eye showed unilateral corneal edema and scarring, anterior lens capsule opacification, +2 cells in the AC, and the Seidel test was negative. Fundus examination was normal bilaterally. Despite there not being history of it, we still suspected ocular trauma considering the patient's occupational risk. Consequently, an orbital computed tomography imaging was performed which revealed a metallic-IOFB in the inferior iridocorneal angle. On the second follow-up day, the corneal edema regressed, and a gonioscopic examination of the affected eye was performed, showing a small foreign body embedded in the inferior iridocorneal angle of the AC. Subsequently, the IOFB was surgically removed using Barkan lens, and excellent visual results were achieved. This case emphasizes the importance of considering IOFB in the differential diagnosis of patients with unilateral corneal edema and anterior lens capsule opacification. Fur-thermore, the presence of IOFB should be definitely excluded in patients with occupational risk of ocular trauma even if there is no history of trauma. More awareness about the proper use of eye protection should be raised to circumvent penetrating ocular-trauma.

RESUMO

AIM: This study sought to determine the prevalence of dentine hypersensitivity (DH) among adults in Turkey. Also, to ascertain the association between DH and both etiological predictors and demographic patient characteristics. MATERIAL METHOD: Using a questionnaire and thermal and evaporative tests, 259 women and 209 men in the age range of 18 to 72 were analyzed. Individually, a clinical evaluation of DH signs was conducted. The DMFT index, gingival index, and gingival bleeding were reported for each subject. The gingival recession and tooth wear of sensitive teeth were also evaluated. Pearson Chi-square test was used to compare categorical data. Logistic Regression Analysis was used to examine the risk factors of DH. Data with dependent categorical variables were compared using the McNemar-Browker test. The significance level was p < 0.05. RESULTS: The average age of the population was 35.6 years. In the present study, a total of 12,048 teeth were analyzed. 1755 had thermal hypersensitivity (14.57%), while 470 experienced evaporative hypersensitivity (3.9%). The incisors were the teeth most impacted by DH, whereas the molars were the least affected. Exposure to cold air and sweet foods, gingival recession, and the presence of noncarious cervical lesions were all strongly linked to DH (Logistic regression analysis, p < 0.05). The cold stimulus increases sensitivity more than the evaporation stimulus. CONCLUSION: Significant risk factors for both thermal and evaporative DH include cold air, consumption of sweet food, presence of noncarious cervical lesions, and gingival recession. More epidemiological research in this area is still required to fully characterize the risk factors and implement the most effective preventive interventions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Due to additional responsibilities and uncertainties during the COVID-19 pandemic, primary healthcare (PHC) workers are at increased risk of burnout. AIM: To determine and compare the burnout levels and related factors in PHC nurses and family physicians (FPs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: An online survey was delivered to PHC workers. Non-random sampling method was used. To evaluate burnout, the Maslach Burnout Inventory was used, which investigates burnout in three categories: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). Multivariate linear regression was used to analyze factors associated with burnout for FPs and nurses separately. FINDINGS: Among the participants, 55.7% were nurses, the mean age was 42.34. FPs and nurses experienced similar levels of burnout in terms of EE. Family physicians had higher levels of low PA and DP. Based on the results of the multivariate analysis, while higher EE levels were significantly associated with unequal distribution of workload and communication problems within the Family Health Center for physicians, the unequal distribution of PPE, lack of appreciation by patients or colleagues and restrictions on work-related rights were relevant factors for nurses. Lack of appreciation and restrictions of the rights were associated with increased DP scores in both groups. Unequal distribution of workload was also associated with reduced PA among FPs. CONCLUSION: PHC physicians and nurses are affected by burnout in different ways under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic based on gender, socioeconomic status and working conditions. To protect the mental health of PHC workers in the next public health emergency, clarification in the organization of services, empowering PHC workers in emergency risk communication and provision of timely, adequate and free PPE is essential. It is also crucial to ensure the rights of health workers through macro policy changes especially during emergencies.

RESUMO

Watermelon and melon are members of the Cucurbitaceae family including economically significant crops in the world. The expansin protein family, which is one of the members of the cell wall, breaks down the non-covalent bonds between cell wall polysaccharides, causing pressure-dependent cell expansion. Comparative bioinformatics and molecular characterization analysis of the expansin protein family were carried out in the watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and melon (Cucumis melo) plants in the study. Gene expression levels of expansin family members were analyzed in leaf and root tissues of watermelon and melon under ABA, drought, heat, cold, and salt stress conditions by quantitative real-time PCR analysis. After comprehensive searches, 40 expansin proteins (22 ClaEXPA, 14 ClaEXPLA, and 4 ClaEXPB) in watermelon and 43 expansin proteins (19 CmEXPA, 15 CmEXPLA, 3 CmEXPB, and 6 CmEXPLB) in melon were identified. The greatest orthologous genes were identified with soybean expansin genes for watermelon and melon. However, the latest divergence time between orthologous genes was determined with poplar expansin genes for watermelon and melon expansin genes. ClaEXPA-04, ClaEXPA-09, ClaEXPB-01, ClaEXPB-03, and ClaEXPLA-13 genes in watermelon and CmEXPA-12, CmEXPA-10, and CmEXPLA-01 genes in melon can be involved in tissue development and abiotic stress response of the plant. The current study combining bioinformatics and experimental analysis can provide a detailed characterization of the expansin superfamily which has roles in growth and reaction to the stress of the plant. The study ensures detailed data for future studies examining gene functions including the roles in plant growth and stress conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Flow diverter stents(FDSs) are recent additions to the endovascular armament for treating ophthalmic segment aneurysms(OSA). In our study we evaluated the long-term effect of FDS placement on multiple Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT) findings, best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) and intra-ocular pressure(IOP). METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted in 35 patients treated with a single FDS placement for OSA, between 2013 and 2018. Spectral-domain OCT was used to measure retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, ganglion cell complex thickness, subfoveal choroidal thickness(SFCT), and other stereometric parameters. Choroidal Vascularity Index(CVI) in a 1.5 mm wide subfoveal choroidal area was calculated. BCVA and IOP were also assessed. These measurements, at final follow up, were compared to the untreated fellow eye to evaluate the long-term effect of FDS placement. RESULTS: This study included 70 eyes from 35 patients (100% female) with a mean age of 54.9 ± 9.8 years and mean follow-up period of 37.3 ± 18.9 months. No ophthalmic artery occlusion was encountered. The mean CVI was significantly higher in the stented side compared to the fellow normal eye (66.90±1.95 vs 65.05±1.93, p=.001) while mean SFCT was significantly reduced (251.23±68.54 vs 288.78±78.95, p=.037). Differences in the remaining studied parameters did not reach statistical significance. The difference in BCVA between stented and fellow normal eyes was also not significant (0.057±0.213 vs 0.060±0.214, p=.977 in logMAR). CONCLUSION: Treatment with FDSs did not cause permanent visual damage. This study is the first to report a decrease in SFCT with a compensatory increase in CVI following FDS placement for OSA.

RESUMO

Exploring the determinants of timely initiation of breastfeeding is necessary for planning efficient breastfeeding promotion programmes. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency and related factors of timely initiation of breastfeeding among Turkish mothers. This study was a cross-sectional, descriptive, mixed model study, which was carried out on mothers with healthy children up to 3 years old who presented to the paediatric clinic between 01 November 2019 and 30 December 2019 in a university hospital. Of the 307 participant mothers, the mean age was 28.3 ± 3.9 years. The frequency of timely initiation of breastfeeding was 70.7%. Significant associations were found between timely initiation of breastfeeding status and residence, type of delivery, type of anaesthesia, birth weight of babies, counselling on timely initiation of breastfeeding during antenatal care and consultant medical staff. In order to increase the breastfeeding rate in the first hour, spontaneous vaginal delivery should be supported and spinal/epidural anaesthesia method should be preferred in cases where caesarean delivery is indicated. Other important steps to increase the ratio of timely initiation of breastfeeding are strengthening breastfeeding counselling services and the midwifery system.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the 2-year clinical performances of high-viscosity glass ionomer and nanohybrid resin composite restorations performed without rubber dam isolation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Occlusal carious lesions on the right and left mandibular second molars of 56 patients (26 female, 30 male patients) were restored in a split-mouth design. High-viscosity glass ionomer (Hv-GIC) (Equia, GC) and nanohybrid resin composite (GrandioSO, Voco) were used as restorative materials. Clinical evaluations of the restorations were performed according to the Fédération Dentaire Internationale criteria. Data were analysed using the Friedman's analysis of variance and Mann-Whitney U tests (α=0.05). RESULTS: After 2 years, the success rate of Hv-GIC restorations was 96% and that of resin composite restorations was 100%. Hv-GIC showed lower marginal discoloration and greater surface wear and loss of anatomic form (p<0.05). Resin composite showed significantly better surface lustre. CONCLUSION: The 2-year performance of resin composite was similar to that of Hv-GIC for the occlusal restorations of mandibular second molars, in spite of being performed without rubber-dam isolation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Saliva contamination can be a clinically significant problem for dental restorations. High-viscosity glass ionomers are a satisfactory alternative to resin composites with the advantage of fast application in such situations. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinical Trials Registration number-date: NCT04488380-22/07/2020, retrospectively registered.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the 2-year clinical performance of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin composite inlay restorations in comparison with direct resin composite restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 44 patients, 120 class II (mesio-occlusal/disto-occlusal) cavities were randomly assigned into two groups; CAD/CAM resin composite inlay group (Lava Ultimate), direct resin composite group (Clearfil Majesty Posterior). Clinical evaluations were performed after 1 week, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years according to the FDI criteria. The data were analyzed using Friedman's ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U tests (α = .05). RESULTS: In 41 patients, 114 restorations were evaluated at the second year (recall rate 93.2%). All restorations were ideal or clinically acceptable. At the first year, considering all criteria, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups. However, there was a significant difference in terms of surface luster at second year, in favor of inlay restorations (P = .015). The marginal staining of resin composites increased after 2 years (P = .046), but there was no significant difference between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Except the surface luster, 2-year clinical performance of CAD/CAM resin composite inlay restorations was found similar to direct resin composite restorations according to FDI criteria CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The clinical performance of CAD/CAM resin composite inlays was acceptable in class II cavities subsequent to 2-year evaluation.

RESUMO

Background and objectives: In this study, the aim was to investigate Urotensin 2 (U-II) levels and oxidant/antioxidant system parameters in pregnancies with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Materials and Methods: A total of 36 healthy, pregnant women who had not been diagnosed with IUGR and 36 pregnant women who had been diagnosed with IUGR at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Outpatient Clinic at Gaziantep University Hospital were enrolled in this study. The serum total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), thiol-disulfide levels, U-II measurements, and oxidative stress index (OSI) calculations were carried out at the biochemistry laboratory at Gaziantep University. Results: According to this study, there was no statistically significant difference between the group with IUGR and the control group of healthy, pregnant women in terms of total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), native thiol, total thiol, disulfide, disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, native thiol/total thiol, and U-II values. There was, however, a positive linear correlation between TOS and total thiol levels in the group with IUGR (p = 0.021, r = 0.384), and a positive linear correlation between OSI and total thiol values in the control group (p = 0.049, r = 0.330). In addition, there was a negative correlation between disulfide levels and gestational weeks at birth in the group with IUGR (p = 0.027, r = 0.369). Conclusions: Consequently, there was no significant difference between the control group and the group with pregnancies complicated by idiopathic IUGR in terms of serum oxidant/antioxidant system parameters and U-II levels. It is necessary to conduct more extensive studies evaluating placental, maternal, and fetal oxidative stress in conjunction in order to investigate the role of oxidative stress in IUGR.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the 3-year clinical performance of high-viscosity glass ionomer restorations with that of composite restorations in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred thirty-four NCCLs were randomised into two groups according to a split-mouth design. In the experimental group (Hv-GIC), lesions were restored with a high-viscosity glass ionomer (EQUIA Fil, GC), whereas a composite resin (G-aenial, GC) was applied in the control group (E&Ra/comp). All restorative materials were used according to the manufacturers' instructions. Clinical evaluations were performed after 1 week, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years using FDI (World Dental Federation) criteria. Data were analysed using Friedman's ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: While retention rates of the Hv-GIC group were 98.5%, 96%, 91%, and 87% in respective evaluation periods, no retention loss was observed in the E&Ra/comp group at any time. There was a statistically significant difference between study groups regarding the retention criterion in both the second and third years (p = 0.008 and p = 0.003, respectively). Furthermore, there was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of surface lustre at the third-year recall, in favour of the E&Ra/comp group (p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS: The 3-year clinical performance of E&Ra/comp restorations in NCCLs was better than that of Hv-GIC restorations. The most common problems in Hv-GIC restorations were a loss of retention and reduction in surface lustre. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although the 3-year clinical performance of Hv-GIC restorations in non-retentive lesions was acceptable, it was worse than in composites. The operator should consider the benefit/loss ratio of Hv-GIC when he/she decides to use this material in non-retentive cavities, especially those that are shallow.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare the two-year clinical performance of high-viscosity glass ionomer (Hv-GIC) restorations in noncarious cervical lesions with nanohybrid composite restorations applied with a three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (E&Ra/nanoC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred thirty-four noncarious cervical lesions were included and assigned to two groups according to the split-mouth design. The cervical lesions in the experimental group were restored with an Hv-GIC (Equia, GC), while a nanohybrid composite (G-aenial, GC) with a three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (Optibond FL, Kerr) was applied as the control. All tested restorative materials were used according to the manufacturers' instructions. Clinical evaluation was performed after one week, six months, one year, and two years using World Dental Federation criteria. Data were analyzed using Friedman's ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U-tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: After two years, Hv-GIC restorations had a retention rate of 91% in comparison to 100% for E&Ra/nanoC restorations. Significant differences existed between the two restorative materials solely with respect to the retention parameter after two years (p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: The two-year clinical performance of Hv-GIC was clinically acceptable. However, the retention of E&Ra/nanoC restorations was significantly better than that of Hv-GIC restorations after two years.

RESUMO

Background. The use of trayless at-home bleaching agents in darker teeth is raising some concerns due to their unknown efficacy. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of tooth discolouration severity on the efficacy and colour stability of two different trayless at-home bleaching systems. Methods. Ninety enamel-dentin samples were divided into two groups: lighter tand darker teeth. The teeth in each group were further divided into three groups (n=15): (1) tray-based system with 10% carbamide peroxide (Opalescence Oh) (control group); (2) a tray applied whitening membrane with 10% hydrogen peroxide (Treswhite Supreme); and (3) a whitening pen with 22% carbamide peroxide (Hollywood Smiles). After bleaching, the teeth were stained for 9 days using red wine. Colour readings before bleaching treatment were determined using a dental spectrophotometer and were repeated 24 h after bleaching treatment and 24 h after staining process. Analysis of variance, Bonferroni and Dunnett C tests were used at 5% significance level. Results. No differences were observed between the bleaching efficacy of Treswhite Supreme and Opalescence Oh in the lighter teeth, while Opalescence Oh had the best bleaching efficacy in the darker teeth (p<0.05). Hollywood Smiles had the worst bleaching efficay but the best color stability in both lighter and darker teeth (p<0.05). No differences were observed between the color stability values of Treswhite Supreme and Opalescence Oh. Conclusion. This study suggested that both the tooth discolouration severity and the type of trayless system used affected the bleaching efficacy, whereas only the type of trayless system affected the color stability.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between striae gravidarum (SG) score and abdominal scar characteristics together with intraperitoneal adhesion (IPA) grades of patients who were hospitalized for second cesarean delivery. METHODS: A total of 145 consecutive women undergoing scheduled cesarean section (CS) in a tertiary level maternity hospital between November 2013 and January 2014 were included in the study. All women had transverse suprapubic skin incision due to the previous CS and none of them had a history of vaginal delivery. Patients were classified according to the SG status, as women with no SG: Group-1(n=53), mild SG: Group-2(n=27) and severe SG: Group 3(n=65). Groups were compared between themselves with regard to various sociodemographic properties, cesarean scar characteristics and IPA scores. RESULTS: No significant difference in the length, width and color of the scar was detected among groups. While flat scar was the most prominent form of scar, the elevated scar was significantly more frequent in Group-1 compared to other groups (p=0.009). IPA grades were 0 or 1 in 77.3% of Group-1, 81.3% of Group-2 and 76% of Group-3. There was no significant difference in IPA scores between groups (p=0.884). After combining CS scar characteristics (flat, depressed and elevated) and SG status [SG (+) or SG (-)], we found no significant difference between the groups in terms of IPA severity. CONCLUSION: Striae gravidarum (SG) was found to be associated with scar characteristics, but not associated with the severity of intraperitoneal adhesion (IPA).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled clinical trial compared the bleaching efficacy of two different at-home bleaching systems on teeth of different shades and their color stability after a 6-month follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-two patients (777 teeth) were randomly divided into three groups: (a) negative control, (b) patients treated with a custom-made tray containing 10% carbamide peroxide (10% CP/PF) (Opalescence PF), and (c) patients treated with a pre-loaded tray containing 6% hydrogen peroxide (6% HP/Go) (Opalescence Go). Teeth in all groups were divided into three sub-groups according to the VITA Classic Shade Guide: light (A1-C1), medium dark (C2-B3), and dark (A3.5-C4). Bleaching systems were performed in accordance with manufacturers' instructions for 14 days. The color values were measured at the baseline, 10 days and 14 days of bleaching, 2 weeks, and 6 months after bleaching. Three-way ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Irrespective of original shade, both bleaching groups showed significantly higher ΔE* values than the control groups, and the ΔE* values were significantly higher in the 10% CP/PF groups than those in the 6% HP/Go groups (p < 0.05). In both bleaching systems, the dark teeth showed higher ΔE* values than the light teeth (p < 0.05). The ΔE* values decreased significantly only in the 10% CP/PF groups after 6 months (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both bleaching agents produced a bleaching effect, but 10% CP/PF was more effective. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A pre-loaded tray system may be used for dental bleaching, but it is still less effective than conventional a 10% carbamide peroxide system, irrespective of the initial shade. RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro antimicrobial effects of chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHBM), and octenidine dihydrochloride (OCT) on cariogenic microorganisms by using their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). CHX, PHBM, and OCT were diluted in distilled water to the final test concentrations. Using the in-tube dilution method, Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Actinomyces viscosus were cultivated on blood agar and Mueller-Hinton broth (MHB) at 37°C for 48 h. They were read using a spectrophotometer to detect MIC. To determine MBC, samples in the range of the turbidity threshold after 24 h were transferred onto blood agar and evaluated for growth after 24 h. Different MICs and MBCs were observed in all disinfectants against each microorganism. The lowest MIC and MBC against S. mutans (60 mg/L) were obtained from PHBM. The lowest values against L. rhamnosus (15 mg/L, 30 mg/L), A. viscosus (30 mg/L), and L. acidophilus (15 mg/L, 30 mg/L) were determined by OCT. PHBM and OCT have the potential to be replaced with CHX because they were effective against cariogenic microorganisms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Striae gravidarum (SG), commonly called stretch marks, is an important cosmetic problem which is not treatable, although preventive measures might be effective. The aim of this study was to determine individual risk factors causing SG and the degree to which preventive measures could be effective. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 211 singleton primiparous pregnant women who were hospitalized for birth and who did not have systemic diseases or other risk factors, like drug use or polyhydramnios. Patients were examined and divided into two groups with respect to whether or not they had striae. Individual features were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: While 159 patients (75.4%) had SG, 52 (24.6%) did not. Patients with striae had a significantly lower mean age and higher mean preconceptional body mass indices than ones without striae (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). Family history (p = 0.002), having a male baby (p = 0.042), and lower educational level (p = 0.033) were also statistically significant in predicting striae. Use of preventive oil or drugs, smoking status, skin type, water intake, and level of financial income did not significantly predict SG. CONCLUSION: Informing women preconceptionally on the importance of modifiable risk factors, such as body weight and maternal age before pregnancy, can be useful, considering that stretch marks are carried for a lifetime and there is no conclusive treatment.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the remineralization potentials of different agents on demineralized enamel surfaces. METHODS: Four hundred and sixty extracted human molars with artificial carious lesions were divided into six groups: (1) control; (2) acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF); (3) Curodont Repair (CR); (4) silver diamine fluoride (SDF); (5) ammonium hexafluorosilicate (SiF); and (6) SiF plus cetylpiridinium chloride (SiF+CPC). They were subdivided according to immersion periods (seven out of 30 days). After demineralization and remineralization procedures, microhardness test (VHN), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis, and confocal laser scanning microscopy evaluation were performed. The data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: By the 30-day remineralization, the mean differences in VHN values were ranked as follows, in order: (1) CR; (2) APF; (3) SiF; (4) SiF+CPC; (5) SDF; and (6) control (P<0.05). The calcium (Ca) content and calcium/phosphate ratio for all groups were significantly higher after 30 days (P<0.05). The greatest lesion depth changes were observed in the CR, APF, SiF, and SDF groups (P<0.05), while the greatest fluorescence changes were observed in the APF, SiF, and CR groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The remineralization was most successful in the CR, APF, and SiF groups, with higher values than for those of the other treatments.
